My Face for the World to See
The Diaries, Letters and Drawings of Candy Darling, Andy Warhol Superstar
This is the voice of Candy Darling speaking, alive once again through her words, over 20 years since her death in 1974. Candy liked to think of herself as an artist and drew pages of designs of dresses and eye make-up. She was born a he: James Slattery, on Nov. 24, 1944. At age 17, he admitted his transvestitism to his mother, and Candy Darling was born. She became active in the club scene in NY City and was swept up in the glamor of the Andy Warhol/Paul Morrissey Factory. Her diaries, with their mixture of soul searching, sharp social analysis, recipes, cartoons and makeup hints, are the expression of a great drag queen icon who was born ahead of her time and willing to risk a pariah existence in the 1960s. Bound in the form of a diary (pink), with lock and key.
